Enjoy a fun snowshoe adventure to the Hegman Pictographs in the BWCAW. Voyageur Outward Bound School staff will provide a brief orientation to the route and help arrange groups of 9 (or fewer) for the roughly three-mile hike to the Pictographs. Note: This is not a guided trip, but the route will be tracked for your group to follow. Snowshoes and poles are provided for those who choose to snowshoe (not required). No experience necessary and families are welcome. The trip to the Pictographs and back takes approximately two hours so arrive promptly at 1 PM to give yourself plenty of time to complete the hike before dark.
Meet at the Hegman Lake entry point on the Echo Trail. Scroll down for directions and a google map link. No need to reserve, just show up!
What to Bring: Wear layers of warm winter clothing so you have options if you get too hot or too cold. The wind is strongest out on the flat, frozen lakes so bring a neck-gaiter or face mask to cover your face if necessary. You may also want a small backpack, water bottle (fill it with warm water so it doesn’t freeze as quickly), thermos, camera (keep the batteries in a pocket close to your body-heat so they don’t die), sunscreen, sunglasses, snacks and any interesting facts you know about the pictographs.
Additional Information: This event is provided as a service to the Ely Winter Festival. There is no charge for attending. If you have any questions, call Megan at the Voyageur Outward Bound School. Her number is: 218-491-6790. Download more information about the Pictographs here.
